Did we forget? We are not just kings and queens.

 In Student Ministry

As parents one of the greatest lies we can tell our children is “You are a little king” or “You are a little queen” and the reason we tell our children this is because we say that God is our father (Ephesians 4:6). We present God as The King of Kings and The Lord of Lords and yes he is! But what I would like to suggest that we have not presented Christ in totality to whom he really is. Of course the world can’t grasp who Jesus really is and who we really are because if we don’t know who Jesus really is, then obviously we don’t know who we really are. Like I said before, He is the King and we are constituents of the kingdom but he was also a carpenter!

So of course we struggle with this and so did the people in Jesus’s hometown. The story is in Matthew 13:53-57 and it reads “53-57 When Jesus finished telling these stories, he left there, returned to his hometown, and gave a lecture in the meeting house. He made a real hit, impressing everyone. “We had no idea he was this good!” they said. “How did he get so wise, get such ability?” But in the next breath they were cutting him down: “We’ve known him since he was a kid; he’s the carpenter’s son. We know his mother, Mary. We know his brothers James and Joseph, Simon and Judas. All his sisters live here. Who does he think he is?” They got their noses all out of joint.

58 But Jesus said, “A prophet is taken for granted in his hometown and his family.” He didn’t do many miracles there because of their hostile indifference.

So let’s not be like those people in Jesus hometown who had a problem with indifference. We expect God to be one thing but he is all things. He is a carpenter, and we should follow his example and also model a carpenter’s spirit. Our truth is proven through God’s earthly occupation as a carpenter – whose job is to build, repair, and hold things together. This is what we should help to do with the lives of the people around us. Yes! We should model God as a king but let’s not forget that He is a carpenter and we should model that. We should accept him for that.
