Remember Whose You Are

We are living in a fast-paced, complicated, and always-connected world.  As a parent, it is easy to become overwhelmed with the pressures of keeping our children protected from the world and connected to God.  Being a Christian does not mean our lives are free from struggle, disappointment, and pain.  In fact, in some ways life is harder because we are called to go against a worldly standard and instead follow a Godly standard.  A new school year has begun, and the beginning of a new year is usually a mix of emotions: excitement (friends, teachers, activities), sadness (goodbye summer vacation), and anxiety (new school, homework, peer pressure).  As we send our children out the door for another school year we need to remind them, and ourselves, whose we are.

“That you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world” (Philippians 2:15)

We are children of God.  We are called to shine His light in a fallen, flawed world.  We are called to be like Jesus: to accept the outsiders and befriend the friendless and to build authentic relationships by showing kindness and mercy.  We are called to be courageous by doing what is right, not what is necessarily popular.  We are called to be wise, through prayer and reading God’s word, so we can know the truth rather than be tempted by what is false.  Our light should shine so that others may come to know God by our words and actions.

Here are a few verses to help us through the school year—and life.  Copy them, post them where you can see them, and repeat them daily.  Here’s to a great year!
