The Pumpkin Prayer

I’m writing this blog on the most beautiful autumn morning.  There is a crispness in the air with bright sunshine streaming through the windows.  Fall is simply the best season, in my opinion.  The beautiful colors of the changing leaves, the blueness of a clear autumn sky, and the myriad of colors in a pumpkin patch remind us of the beauty of God’s creation.  We are an important part of His creation.  We have been created in His image.  We have been chosen by God and are set apart.  Using pumpkins as our guide, we can turn to God in prayer this month by meditating on His word.*Just as we choose a pumpkin from the patch, God knows us and chooses us.

'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you.  You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.' Jeremiah 29:11-13
'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.' Isaiah 43:1

*Just as we wash a pumpkin, God cleanses us on the inside and out.

'Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.' Psalm 51:10
'You are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.' John 15:3

*Just as we carve our pumpkin to create something new, God changes us and makes us new.

'Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.  The old has passed away; behold the new has come.' 2 Corinthians 5:17

*Just as we illuminate our pumpkin creation, God’s light shines in our hearts.

'You are the light of the world.  A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.  In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in Heaven.' Matthew 5:14-16
'For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light.' Ephesians 5:8

Thank you, God, for creating and choosing us.  Change our hearts and renew us so we can be your light in this world.
